Houston, Texas Brain Injury Lawyers
Putting Clients First. Always.
Every year, more than 1.7 million Americans suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Of those, 700,000 experience long-term disability as a result. Children under 4 are also very likely to suffer from TBI. TBI may be caused by car accidents, motorcycle accidents, trucking accidents, or when a pedestrian is hit by a car. No matter what the cause, TBI is serious and can lead to severe and debilitating conditions.
A brain injury caused by someone else’s actions can be particularly traumatizing, and your life may never be the same. If you or someone you love has suffered a traumatic brain injury, an experienced brain injury lawyer can help you put your life back together.
Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury
A brain injury is not always easy to identify. There are four common causes of TBI, and it is important that you understand the difference between each one. Understanding the cause of a TBI helps your lawyer identify the negligent party and identify the type of TBI you have experienced.
- Concussions are one of the most common and easily recognizable forms of TBI. A concussion is caused when the brain strikes the inside of the skull. This may be due to a direct blow to the head, or if the head is violently shaken as in a car accident.
- Brain penetration injuries occur when the brain is penetrated by a foreign object, such as a knife, bullet, or other object.
- A contusion refers to bleeding on the brain and may be the result of a direct blow to the head. Contusions often need to be resolved through surgery.
- Shaken baby syndrome occurs when a small child is violently shaken resulting in brain trauma.
Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
TBI is a serious, complex injury that can be difficult to identify. TBI is obvious if you experienced a fractured skull, a brain bleed, or a coma due to head trauma. But mild cases of TBI can also result in debilitating and long-lasting side effects.
Other names for Mild TBI include:
- Concussion
- Minor head trauma
- Minor TBI
- Minor brain injury
- Minor head injury
Minor TBI is often the result of forceful motion of the head, an impact that causes a brief change in mental status (such as confusion, disorientation, or loss of memory), or loss of consciousness for more than 30 minutes. Symptoms are often referred to as post-concussive syndrome.
Common symptoms of TBI include:
- Headaches
- Difficulty remembering things and concentrating
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Irritability
- Difficulty sleeping
- Sudden and sometimes drastic mood changes
- Feelings of depression
- Seizures
- Nausea
- Loss of smell
- Sensitivity to light and sounds
- Getting lost or confused
- Slowness in thinking
Any of these side effects can be caused by a TBI. In severe cases, TBI can result in a coma. Even in less severe cases, the symptoms may never completely go away.
TBI is unique because symptoms may not appear for weeks or even months after the traumatic event. Symptoms of TBI are often subtle and may not be noticed by the injured person. Family and friends may be the first to notice changes in mood and other symptoms. Recognizing you or a loved one may have suffered a TBI is the first step to the best outcome and recovery.
